🌊 When the Wind Began to Fade — Lessons from the Age of Sail

Imagine being a sailor in the 1800s, hearing whispers in the port that steamships were coming — great iron vessels that could move without wind, without sails, without the sea’s permission.
For generations, sailors had mastered the art of the wind — reading clouds, climbing rigging, mending sails, and trusting nature’s rhythm. Suddenly, all those skills that defined their worth were at risk of being swept away by machinery and smoke.
Some feared it. Others saw opportunity. Those who adapted became engineers, mechanics, and machinists. Those who didn’t, watched their world change around them.
The lesson? Every new technology — whether it’s steam, electricity, AI, or automation — brings the same question: how will we help our people move from what was to what will be?
As leaders, our role is to make that transition human — to preserve dignity, build new skills, and help people find purpose in the next era of work.
💭 As an HR leader in Fiji, I’m reminded that the waves of change never stop — but we can always learn how to steer through them.
